A great many of the sensors a grower already owns are shouting. The weather station on the fence post, the thermometer in the cooler, the soil probe by the tomatoes: each broadcasts its readings into the air, one way, for its own little display to hear. A listener is a second pair of ears. It hears the same broadcasts and lands every reading in a place you own. Which listener you build depends first on the band your sensors use, and that depends on where in the world you are.
The idea.
Nothing is paired. Nothing about the sensor changes. Its display keeps working, its maker never knows, and the listener transmits nothing. That is the Collect layer applied to hardware you have already paid for. Two decisions follow, in this order:
- The band decides the hardware: which radio module, which antenna, and what your country permits. It is printed on the sensor.
- The family decides the software: which listener, and which build of it. An AcuRite and an Ecowitt can share a band and still need different builds, because they shape their signals differently.
This page is organised by the first decision and points you to the second.
One build named on this page has not yet heard a sensor: Build 3, the FSK build for Ecowitt, Ambient Weather, La Crosse View and Bresser. Its images are published on a bench page, marked unproven, for anyone who wants to try them before we have.

That is the general picture, not a legal ruling; radio rules are national. For one maker’s country-by-country list, the Ecowitt guide has a country finder built from Ecowitt’s own sheet. The safest sign that a version is approved where you live is a seller in your own country.

The cheapest place to start, and the only band with nothing to wire. Hear cheap Bluetooth thermometers; push the readings to a place you own.

920 MHz.
Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia. Ecowitt sells a 920 MHz version of its family for these countries, and it sends the same FSK messages as every other version, so Build 3 is the build, with a CC1101 of the “868/915” kind and an 8.1 cm antenna. The listener’s band field accepts the frequency. We have not confirmed the exact channel these versions use and have heard none of them; set the band to the frequency printed on your sensor, and tell us what you hear.
Our own LoRa nodes.
The same model, turned around: a field node is a sensor that shouts, built by you, for the far field where there is no Wi-Fi. The far-field twin of the BLE Listener: hears every LoRa Field Node on the property and lands their readings in a place you own.

Buying the radio.
- CC1101 modules come in two kinds, sold as “433 MHz” and “868/915 MHz”. The chip tunes 300 to 928 MHz either way. The label tells you which band the module’s antenna circuit was built for; on the other band it still works, with a shorter reach. Buy the kind for your band.
- The antenna is most of the range. A straight quarter-wave wire, vertical, clear of the ESP32: the lengths are in the table above.
- One signal shape per board. The sub-gigahertz radio hears on-off keying or FSK, never both, and which one is fixed by the image you flash. The sensor finder on the listener page answers “which build?” for a model name.
- Not the nRF905, not a LoRa module. Radios built only to exchange their own packets cannot hand over the raw signal the decoders need. The CC1101, and the SX1276 on a Heltec V2, can.
Frequently asked questions.
What is a listener?
A small board that only receives. Many sensors a grower already owns broadcast their readings one way, in the open, for their own display to hear. A listener hears the same broadcasts, decodes them, and sends every reading to a place the grower owns: an endpoint, an MQTT broker, or Home Assistant. Nothing is paired, nothing about the sensor changes, and the listener transmits nothing.
Which band do my sensors use?
It is printed on the sensor or its box. Bluetooth sensors are 2.4 GHz everywhere. Consumer weather stations and probes use 433 MHz almost everywhere, 868 MHz in Europe and the countries that follow its rules, 915 MHz in the Americas, Australia and New Zealand, and 920 MHz in Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Malaysia. The same model is often sold in several versions, so check the one in your hand.
Can one board listen on every band?
No. A radio listens on one frequency at a time, and the sub-gigahertz radio also hears one kind of modulation per image. Bluetooth needs no extra radio at all, so a Bluetooth listener and a sub-gigahertz listener are two boards. A site with on-off-keying sensors and FSK sensors needs one board for each.
Is the band the same thing as the brand?
No, and this catches people out. AcuRite is on-off keying on 433 MHz. Ecowitt is FSK, on 433, 868, 915 or 920 MHz depending on the country it was sold in. So the band tells you which radio module and antenna to buy, and the brand tells you which listener build to flash.
Does it work outside the United States?
The Bluetooth listener works anywhere. The sub-gigahertz listener tunes from 300 to 928 MHz, so the band is a setting, and its decoder lists include the families common in Europe. What we cannot yet say is that we have heard a European sensor: our bench is in Tennessee, and every row that has not been heard there says so. The OAT LoRa gateway accepts 902 to 928 MHz only, which is the Americas and Oceania.
