How borrowing seed works.
Take a few packets, usually free, grow them, and if some plants do well, let them go to seed and bring a share back so the next gardener can borrow it. Bringing seed back is encouraged, never required. Most seed libraries stock open-pollinated and heirloom varieties because those grow true from saved seed; hybrids do not, so most ask you not to return them. Donated seed is not germination-tested the way store seed is, so sow a little extra.
Worth asking before you go:
- Is it open right now? Many run from late winter into summer.
- How many packets can I take, and do I need a library card?
- Which branch has the seed, and can I reserve it online?
- Do you take seed donations, and how should I label saved seed?
