Frequently asked questions.
How many USDA-inspected slaughter plants does the Library list?
The Agriculture Resource Library lists 1,511 USDA-inspected slaughter plants across 51 states, each with its own page. The states with the most are Pennsylvania (127), Texas (99), Georgia (68).
What is the difference between a USDA-inspected plant and a custom-exempt butcher?
A USDA-inspected plant has a federal inspector on site when it runs, and the meat it produces can be sold to stores, restaurants and across state lines. A custom-exempt butcher cuts and wraps an animal for the owner's own use; that meat cannot be sold. Custom-exempt shops are licensed by the state and are not in this federal list, so ask your state department of agriculture for that roster.
