Implement sizing rules of thumb
| Implement | HP per foot of width | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rotary tiller | 5-7 HP/ft | Heavy soil = upper end. Match width to tractor wheel track. |
| Moldboard plow | 10-15 HP per 14" bottom (so 28" plow = 25-30 HP) | Heavy clay needs more power; sandy soil less |
| Disk harrow (offset) | 5-8 HP/ft | Tandem disk needs less than single offset |
| Rotary cutter (brush hog) | 5 HP/ft for light grass; 10 HP/ft for woody brush | Heavy duty for woody; standard for grass |
| Finish mower | 4-5 HP/ft | Lawn / orchard floor |
| Hay rake | 1-2 HP/ft (PTO not always needed) | Most are ground-driven |
| Mower-conditioner | 10-15 HP/ft | Cuts + conditions; high power demand |
| Round baler (4×5) | 40-60 HP minimum | Larger 5×5/5×6 balers need 70-100+ HP |
| Small square baler | 30-50 HP | 40 HP comfortable; 25 HP marginal |
| Manure spreader | 1 HP per 100 lb capacity | 50 cu ft = ~30-40 HP |
| Grain drill (no-till) | 5-7 HP/ft | Heavier for no-till disk-opener types |
| Subsoiler / chisel | 15-25 HP per shank | Soil compaction breakup; depth matters |
| Post-hole auger | 15-25 HP minimum | 9-12" auger; larger augers need more |
| Snow blower | 5-8 HP/ft | Heavy snow = upper end |
Tractor selection by acreage
| Acreage / use | Tractor class | PTO HP range |
|---|---|---|
| 1-5 acres / homestead | Sub-compact | 15-25 HP |
| 5-20 acres / hobby farm | Compact | 25-40 HP |
| 20-100 acres / small commercial | Utility | 40-80 HP |
| 100-500 acres / mid commercial | Mid-ag | 80-150 HP |
| 500+ acres / large commercial | Large ag | 150+ HP |
The classic mistake is buying too small. A 25 HP compact tractor that "should be enough for 5 acres" can't pull a real plow, can't run a real PTO mower, and can't lift a full pallet of feed. Most homesteaders end up trading up to 40-50 HP within 2-3 years. Buy the size you'll actually use.
