Sunrise/Sunset Ramp.
Sunrise / Sunset Ramp Designer
Design photoperiod transition ramps. Smooth lights-on / lights-off curves, optional end-of-day far-red pulse.
Why ramp transitions matter
Plants evolved with the sun. Natural photoperiod transitions are gradual — sunrise takes 30+ minutes from horizon to full daylight; sunset is similarly gradual. Indoor cultivation that uses simple on/off relays subjects plants to instantaneous light changes that don't match their evolved expectations.
The effects of stepped (vs ramped) transitions:
- Stomatal stress: stomata adjust to light level; sudden changes cause stress responses including gas-exchange disruption
- Photosynthesis startup time: photosynthetic enzymes need warmup; stepped lights mean plants are below peak photosynthesis for the first 10-15 min of photoperiod
- Hormonal signaling: phytochrome state changes more abruptly; some plants interpret stepped transitions as stress signals
- Worker / pet experience: stepped 1000-watt lights are jarring to humans entering the room
Curve types
| Curve | Behavior | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Linear | Constant rate of brightening / dimming | Simple controllers; minimal benefit but low complexity |
| Smooth (sigmoid) | Slow start, fast middle, slow end — natural feel | Most indoor cultivation; minimizes plant stress |
| Solar | Mimics atmospheric brightness curve, including spectral shifts | Solar Replication mode in the OAT Light Engine |
End-of-Day Far Red (EOD-FR)
An end-of-day far-red pulse is a 10-15 minute exposure to far-red (around 730 nm) light immediately after the main photoperiod ends. Effects:
- Phytochrome reset: drops Pfr (active phytochrome) levels rapidly, signaling "evening" / "shade"
- Accelerated flowering: short-day flowering plants like cannabis can finish 5-10 days earlier with consistent EOD-FR exposure
- Increased stretch: same signal that promotes shade-avoidance stretch; useful for some cultivars, problematic for others
- Modest terpene/quality enhancements: some growers report enhanced terpene production with sustained EOD-FR exposure during late flower
Modern tunable LED fixtures often have dedicated far-red channels for EOD pulses. Standalone FR LED bars (Mars Hydro, Black Dog, supplemental fixtures from major brands) can be added to fixed-spectrum setups.
Equipment for ramps
| Equipment | Capability |
|---|---|
| 0-10V dimmable LED fixture + dimmable controller | Smooth ramping; standard commercial setup |
| Trolmaster, Argus, Smart Bee, etc. | Integrated controllers with built-in ramp + EOD-FR functions |
| DALI / DMX dimmable | Theatrical-grade smooth control; some Heliospectra and California Lightworks fixtures |
| HID with magnetic ballast | NO ramping (full-on or off only); use timer relay only |
| HID with electronic ballast | Sometimes 50%/100% dimming only; check ballast specs |
| Generic ESP32 + relay | Step transitions only; for ramping use ESP32 + 0-10V output |
