Apiary Site Survey
Score a potential location for your hives. 12 factors covering forage, environment, neighbors, and regulatory. Stack rank multiple sites.
Apiary site essentials
| Factor | What "good" looks like |
|---|---|
| Forage diversity | Continuous bloom from earliest spring through hard frost; minimum 1-2 mile radius diversity |
| Water source | Clean water within ~200 ft. Bees prefer puddling sources (mud edges) over open water. |
| Sun exposure | South / SE morning sun; afternoon shade in hot climates. 4-8 hours direct sun ideal. |
| Wind protection | Protected from prevailing winter winds. Windbreaks (natural or built) on north + west. |
| Drainage | Hives elevated; ground drains; no standing water at base. |
| Vehicle access | Close enough to drive to. Inspections + honey extraction require equipment transport. |
| Pesticide exposure | Distance from agricultural sprays + lawn-treatment heavy areas. Mosquito spraying particularly damaging. |
| Pollinator habitat overlap | If competing with other apiaries within 2 miles, forage carrying capacity may be insufficient |
| Neighbors / public | Adequate distance from foot traffic; setbacks from property lines and roads |
| Predator pressure | Bears, skunks, raccoons; presence may require electric fencing |
| Local zoning | Many municipalities have apiary ordinances; HOA rules; setback requirements |
| Vandalism risk | Visible from public road = higher risk; consider partial concealment + signage |
Regulatory checklist
- Local zoning + ordinances. Check city/county website or call zoning office. Many require permits, setbacks, hive limits.
- HOA rules. Some HOAs forbid; others allow with notification.
- State apiary registration. Most states require registration with state apiarist (often free; some small fee).
- Setback rules. Common state requirements: 10-25 ft from property line; 50 ft+ from public road or sidewalk; flight path direction matters.
- Insurance. Liability coverage for stings if neighbors / passersby. Many homeowner policies cover; verify.
- Bear country. Some states require electric fencing in bear-prone areas.
Setting up the bee yard
| Item | Specification |
|---|---|
| Hive stand height | 14-24 inches off ground; deters skunks; reduces moisture; eases inspection |
| Hive spacing | ~3 ft minimum between hives; 5 ft preferred for management; 8+ ft if 4+ hives |
| Hive orientation | Entrance facing south or southeast; morning sun on entrance |
| Slope / tilt | Slight forward tilt (1-2°) to drain rainwater out of hive |
| Ground prep | Mowed or mulched within 6 ft of hive; reduces wax-moth + small hive beetle pressure |
| Water source | Provide if not within 100 ft naturally; bees train to local source |
| Visual barriers | Solid fence, hedge, or netting forces bees to fly UP and over neighbor area, reducing conflicts |
